TL;DR

  • Lane Kiffin is expected to become the LSU Tigers' next head coach, with a potential $14 million annual salary.
  • Kiffin is reportedly demanding to finish the season with Ole Miss and threatening to poach players and staff.
  • Ole Miss representatives advised Kiffin he wouldn't coach the team in the playoffs if he took another position.
  • LSU is sending aircraft to Oxford to transport Kiffin and his entourage, signaling a finalized agreement.

Lane Kiffin is anticipated to become the LSU Tigers's subsequent head coach, as reported by Pete Nakos, Chris Low, and Brett McMurphy of On3. This development offers a possible conclusion to one of the most protracted coaching narratives in college football.

The agreement is not yet finalized, and a contract has not been officially signed. But according to ESPN's Pete Thamel and Mark Schlabach, it "would be a shock" if he didn't sign it.

Within LSU's circles, optimism has steadily risen, as the Tigers are reportedly ready to offer Kiffin a coaching salary among the sport's elite. This potential agreement, according to sources speaking with On3, could reach $14 million annually, a sum that would surpass the earnings of Georgia's Kirby Smart.

Kiffin engaged in discussions lasting over three hours on Saturday evening with Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter and chancellor Glenn Boyce, which were then followed by further conversations that extended for several more hours.

The delay hinges on whether Kiffin would be allowed to keep coaching Ole Miss during their College Football Playoff campaign. Ole Miss representatives had advised Kiffin that he wouldn't be permitted to lead the squad in the playoffs should he take on a different position.

"Kiffin is “essentially demanding to finish the season (w/Ole Miss) while simultaneously threatening to poach” Ole Miss’ roster & staff if he can’t, source told @On3sports. “It’s unfortunately gotten even messier than expected as emotions are high”

A team assembly at Ole Miss is slated for 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, possibly functioning as Kiffin’s concluding remarks to the Rebels. This session comes after Ole Miss' 11-1 conclusion to the regular season and their significant 38-19 victory against Mississippi State on Friday in the Egg Bowl.

Ole Miss appears poised to stage a preliminary round College Football Playoff contest, intensifying concerns regarding Kiffin's prospects for the postseason.

Should the transaction be finalized, LSU would gain one of the sport's most debated offensive minds, concluding a narrative that stretched over several weeks, involved millions in Name, Image, and Likeness forecasts, and carried consequences for the postseason.
