The Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide are heading into the SEC Championship Game heavily impacted by injuries, with both teams missing key starters that could play a big role in Saturday’s matchup.
Georgia enters the game with six players officially out and one listed as questionable. Alabama is facing an even tougher injury situation, with eight players ruled out and four more questionable. This battle of battered rosters will add an extra layer of uncertainty to what is already a highly anticipated championship game.
One of Georgia’s biggest concerns is its running back group. Chauncey Bowens has been battling injuries for weeks and hasn’t had a carry since the Texas game. Although he is not officially on the injury report, it’s clear he isn’t at full strength. Freshman running back Bo Walker will definitely miss the game after undergoing surgery following a reported car accident. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart confirmed, “Bo is not going to be with us.”
The Bulldogs’ offensive line also takes a hit with center Drew Bobo ruled out after suffering a foot injury against Georgia Tech. Bobo was seen wearing a walking boot and will be replaced by Malachi Toliver for the championship game. Georgia’s injury woes continue on both sides of the ball, with wide receiver Colbie Young, tight end Ethan Barbour, and defensive lineman Jordan Hall all out. Defensive back Kyron Jones remains sidelined with a foot injury. Safety Zion Branch is questionable, and if he cannot play, Georgia will be without two key members of its secondary. One positive note for the Bulldogs is that wide receiver Talyn Taylor is no longer on the injury report.
Alabama’s injury list is also extensive. The Crimson Tide will be without defensive back Kameron Howard, defensive linemen LT Overton and Jeremiah Beaman, running back Kevin Riley, defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick, offensive lineman Mal Waldrep, linebackers Jah-Marien Latham and Kelby Collins. In addition, running back Jam Miller, offensive lineman Kam Dewberry, and tight ends Josh Cuevas and Danny Lewis are all listed as questionable for the game.
Historically, Alabama has dominated the SEC Championship matchups against Georgia, holding a perfect 4-0 record in their four title game meetings in 2012, 2018, 2021, and 2023. These games, all played at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, have been highly competitive with Alabama often overcoming deficits in dramatic comebacks. For example, in 2012 Alabama rallied from a 10-21 deficit to win 32-28, and in 2018 they overcame a 14-28 second-half deficit to win 35-28. Though Georgia later beat Alabama in the 2021 National Championship, Alabama dominated that SEC title game with a 41-24 win. Their victory in 2023 marked their fourth straight SEC Championship win over the Bulldogs.
Both programs are consistent contenders and frequently appear at the top of the SEC standings. With this being the third time in five seasons they meet in the title game, the rivalry continues to grow. Despite Georgia’s powerhouse status, the SEC Championship stage has historically favored Alabama in these high-stakes contests.
This weekend’s game will test the depth and resilience of both teams, especially given the heavy injury toll. Fans can expect a tough, physical battle as Georgia and Alabama look to add another chapter to their storied rivalry.
