The Colorado Buffaloes and their head football coach Deion Sanders made a quarterback change.

Kaidon Salter, the transfer from Liberty, has been benched. But they didn't go with five-star Julian "JuJu" Lewis as his replacement.

Instead, it's the guy who was presumed to be the No. 3 quarterback, Ryan Staub, who starts Friday night against Houston.

Lewis did get into the game against Delaware, but Staub is the one who did enough to earn the Week 3 start against the Cougars.

Why is Ryan Staub starting for Colorado over Julian Lewis?

Ryan Staub is a redshirt sophomore, with all three of his college years so far spent at Colorado. That means he has the greatest comfort level in offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur's system.

"I think he knows what I like. I know that he knows what I like," Staub told reporters after the Delaware game. "As soon as I'm out there and I get the call, I know that he sees something, and this is what we're going to run, and I trust it, and off we go. The relationship with coach Pat has been great. I've been here for almost three years with him now, and we've built a great relationship and a lot of trust. He knows exactly what I'm good at and what I like, and we were able to roll."

Staub used that knowledge to audible into multiple deep completions to Sincere Brown.

"He did what he's supposed to do," Sanders told reporters earlier this week. "Staub did what we expected him to do. You all are surprised. We weren't. We're thankful and appreciative and just happy for him and elated for him that he seized the darn moment."

Staub has stuck it out, rather than transferring, which also earned him some points in the building.

"You gotta understand, Staub is a lovable dude," Sanders said. "Everybody who's played here previously has reached out to him and congratulated him, or some way or another tweeted him or done something to let them know how proud they are. He's always been a standup guy, no matter who's starting. He's always been there in support... Hats off to him because he's the ultimate teammate."

The question becomes: Will Lewis consider transferring if Staub keeps the job?

That remains to be seen. He'd be highly sought after if he did.

For now, though, all that's certain is that Staub is the Friday night starter against a strong Houston team.
