Deion Sanders walked away from Colorado’s 31–7 victory over Delaware proud of more than just his quarterbacks. The head coach singled out the defense, discipline, and special teams as defining traits of the Buffs’ first win of the season.
“For the first time no turnovers,” Sanders said. “Defense several attackers were lost. PBU’s, five quarterback hits, two sacks, one interception, one forced fumble.”
Sanders was quick to credit his kicking units for setting the tone. “Mata moved into the top 20 in scoring in CU history and eighth amongst kickers,” he said. “It was the 15th game in CU history with 50 yards plus average on five plus punts. He did an outstanding job. I just gave game balls to all our specialists…they did a fantastic job and I am pleased and I am proud of them tremendously.”

The improvement in discipline was also a theme. “I think we only had [a few] penalties. One we took because we wanted to see if they would jump offside. I think we had four for 40. Now I am not happy about that again. But overall we did a good job. I think we were one of the most penalized teams in the Big 12 a year ago and we made a conscious effort to be much more disciplined and that is what we are trying to do.”
Sanders highlighted the energy provided by Australian punter Damon Greaves. “New Mate is unbelievable,” he said. “Not only is he kicking the heck out the ball, but they are covering their butts off and they are getting down there. Somebody has to run down there and catch it and pin them back on the one or the five or whatever he did today. He is phenomenal.”
