Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders revealed on Jason and Travis Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast that the Baltimore Ravens weren’t the only team that inquired about Shedeur Sanders’ interest ahead of the 2025 NFL draft.
Coach Prime shared that the Philadelphia Eagles, Jason Kelce’s team during his entire 13-year playing career, was also intrigued by the idea of the “Grown QB” being their primary backup. Just as Shedeur didn’t want to back up Lamar Jackson with the Ravens, though, Sanders didn’t want to be behind Jalen Hurts on the Eagles’ depth chart.
Deion also revealed that he had a hand in negotiating Shedeur out of being selected by the Ravens, which was the team that Coach Prime ended his playing career with.
“Because this was all over the media, because I know y’all keep it above everybody … let me tell you something. How in the world they made a big deal out of — Philly called us on draft day. They didn’t mention that. I just let a cat out of the bag. Okay, who was it? Baltimore and in the Browns. They forget, you know I played for Baltimore, so me and Ozzie (Newsome) are cool. So there you go,” Coach Prime said.
“He understood that whole conversation, and he wanted to talk to Shedeur as well as he wanted to talk to me. And I put Shedeur on the phone, and Shedeur, I don’t want to say how it went, but how in the world can somebody fault him for saying or thinking ‘why in the world would I go back up Lamar (Jackson) for 10 more years?’ Like who comes in with that mindset?”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was extremely opportunistic in reporting on Shedeur’s Ravens interest the day Baltimore hosted Cleveland, mere hours before kickoff. On that part, being made a big deal for entertainment purposes, Coach Prime is spot-on.
Then again, Coach Prime is doing the same thing, speaking on one of the most-watched podcasts in the world.
Shedeur likely had more interest than just the Ravens and the Eagles. It’s unclear how many more retroactive stories we’ll hear about Sanders’ pre-draft process, but as he continues to flounder on the Cleveland Browns’ bench, these may be the only stories we get besides Shedeur giving player-speak statements on the scout team.
