Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders’ quarterback decision could well come down to belief.
As John Mayer once said, belief is what we’re fighting for. In Boulder, Ryan Staub seems to have won it from key people after a 7/10, 157-yard passing performance against the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens, punctuated by two touchdown passes.
Colorado Buffaloes On SI’s Thomas Gorski believes Shedeur Sanders’ belief in Staub, evidenced by a phone call the two had after the 31-7 win over UD, is a sign that Coach Prime is going to choose his son’s two-year backup against the Houston Cougars this Friday night.
“The fact that Staub is getting praise from him sends a clear message: there’s belief in him. And if anyone knows whether Staub is ready, it’s Sanders, who has thrived under the spotlight before,” Gorski wrote.
“The endorsement carries extra weight because Staub is stepping into the same role Shedeur just left. Having the trust of someone who’s been there gives Staub confidence and tells teammates — and fans — that he’s capable of leading the offense.
“In the end, Sanders’ support isn’t just a kind gesture. It’s a passing of the torch, and for Staub, that belief could turn a temporary opportunity into a breakout moment.”
Coach Prime’s QB decision has $1.8 million implications.
Kaidon Salter accounts for a third of that, and is out of eligibility anyway. If it does or doesn’t work out, the Liberty Flames transfer will just move on from college football altogether either way. Julian Lewis is a different story. He has years ahead of him. Losing the Carrollton, Georgia, product would be massive, considering many saw Lewis’s commitment as the reason CU kept Coach Prime after his sons and Travis Hunter left.
Deion wants to bring Lewis along slowly. He also wants to win every year, including this one. Coach Prime claimed this is Colorado’s most talented roster. He’s not trying to back that up with regression.
If Staub is who Sanders believes in, Lewis will have to wait until he can earn that designation himself.
