West Virginia looks to keep its postseason hopes on track on the road against Arizona State on Saturday at Mountain America Stadium.
The Sun Devils (6-3) has won three of its past four and is coming off a 24-19 road victory over Iowa State despite losing starting quarterback Sam Leavitt for the season with a foot injury. Nebraska transfer Jeff Sims stepped in and delivered one of the nation’s top dual-threat performances of the week, throwing for 177 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 228 yards and two scores.
ASU will again rely heavily on Sims, along with steady tailback Raleek Brown, who has posted between 64 and 69 rushing yards in each of his past four outings.
West Virginia (4-6) snapped a two-game skid with a 29-22 win over Colorado behind quarterback Scotty Fox Jr., who threw for 202 yards and added 58 on the ground. The Mountaineers continue to struggle defensively, ranking 101st nationally in total defense and surrendering 259.4 passing yards per game, an area Arizona State hopes to exploit with receiver Jordyn Tyson, who leads the team with 628 yards and eight touchdowns.
Third-down efficiency could be a big factor. Arizona State ranks 117th in FBS in third-down conversions and is among the nation’s most penalized teams, while West Virginia struggles to control possession, ranking 129th at just 27:09 per game.
Arizona State hosts West Virginia (1 p.m. ET, TNT).
