Alabama’s defense delivered one of the most dominant performances in program history, holding Eastern Illinois to just 34 total yards in a 56-0 rout Saturday. It was the fourth-fewest yards ever allowed by the Crimson Tide and the fewest given up in a game since 1962.

Even without several defensive starters, the Crimson Tide overwhelmed the Panthers (3-9) from the opening snap. Alabama intercepted a pass on the first possession and turned it into a touchdown, then blocked a punt on the next series to set up another quick score.

By halftime, 31 of Alabama’s 38 offensive snaps had been run in Eastern Illinois territory, who received $560,000 for the matchup.

Alabama (9-2, 6-1 SEC) outgained the Panthers 539-34 and ran for a season-high 269 yards. All eight touchdowns came on the ground. The most rushing scores by the Tide in a game since 1979 against Vanderbilt.

“I think it’s always execution and just more reps,” Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said. “I thought they all ran hard and got their opportunities. Just trying to build on everything.”

The win sends Alabama into next week’s Iron Bowl trip to Auburn with a chance to clinch a spot in the SEC championship game.
