Alabama star defends Kalen DeBoer after Rose Bowl defeat image

Alabama linebacker Deontae Lawson came to the defense of coach Kalen DeBoer following the Crimson Tide’s 38-3 loss to Indiana in the Rose Bowl, pushing back against criticism that intensified after the program’s worst postseason defeat in decades and overall since 1998.

Alabama was routed by the Indiana Hoosiers in Pasadena, a loss that followed nearly three weeks off and quickly fueled debate about DeBoer’s future. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza completed 14-of-16 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns as the Hoosiers dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage.

The Crimson Tide surrendered 215 rushing yards and managed just 23 yards on 17 carries, leaving quarterback Ty Simpson under constant pressure. ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum said Alabama was beaten “into submission,” a criticism often reserved for teams that fell short of the physical standards established under Nick Saban.

Inside the locker room, however, Lawson said support for DeBoer remains strong.

“Coming behind the greatest coach of all time, nobody really knew what to expect,” Lawson told On3. “But to watch Coach DeBoer put his print on the program and get guys to buy in has been special. He’s a true player-coach.”

Lawson added that DeBoer’s commitment to improvement and player development will ultimately define his tenure in Tuscaloosa.

Lawson finished the 2025 season with 80 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. While fans debate what comes next for Alabama, one of the team’s leaders made it clear he believes the program is still headed in the right direction.
