Top-ranked Purdue breezed in its season opener, but the Boilermakers could get more of a challenge Friday from a team that's had success as an underdog in the past.
Darling of the 2024 NCAA Tournament after its first-round upset of Kentucky, Oakland is opening this campaign with a brutal top-10 tripleheader. The Golden Grizzlies got blown out by No. 7 Michigan on Monday and will have to try and bounce back against No. 1 Purdue before traveling to No. 2 Houston next week.
As the longest-tenured coach in Division I, Greg Kampe isn't afraid of anything, but Oakland will have its hands full against Purdue after allowing Michigan to shoot 64.3 percent from the field in the opener.
Fletcher Loyer led the Boilermakers with 30 points against Evansville in the opener, making 7 of 10 from 3-point range. The Golden Grizzlies got 20 points from Isaac Garrett and 18 from Tuburu Naivalurua in the Michigan game, but will need numerous scorers to step up in this one.
