  • The 2026 cohort could accelerate Vanderbilt's rebuilding and competitiveness in the SEC.

The Vanderbilt Commodores men’s basketball program recorded its first top-10 recruiting class since 2018, landing at No. 9 nationally in the 2026 cycle, according to ESPN. Believe it or not, the football program isn't the only one stealing the spotlight. Nashville is on fire with Vandy surging.

Commodores coach Mark Byington secured three commitments for the SC Next 100. These include point guard Anthony Brown Jr. (Ranked 49th), wing Ethan Mgbako (ranked 90th), and center Jackson Sheffield (ranked 94th).

Brown excels as a high-volume distributor and scorer, demonstrating strong performance on the EYBL circuit. Mgbako, whose older brother Mackenzie was a former five-star recruit, is evolving into a versatile wing with increasing offensive potential. Sheffield offers interior size and is prepared for elite-level competition.

This group signifies a significant recruiting success for Vanderbilt, as they haven't secured three top-100 prospects in one recruiting cycle for a considerable time. The three newcomers fill crucial roster gaps with a playmaking guard, an athletic wing, and a dominant presence in the paint.

Should these recruits meet or exceed projections, Vanderbilt could hasten its rebuilding process within a demanding environment. For Byington and his team, the 2026 cohort might signify a crucial turning point, one that propels the Commodores back into significant SEC competition.
