No. 1 Purdue took a shocking loss on Saturday as Iowa State rolled to an 81–58 win in West Lafayette. The Cyclones came in ranked No. 10, but they played with confidence from the start and controlled the game on both ends of the court.
Iowa State’s Milan Momcilovic led the way with 20 points and helped the Cyclones knock down 11 total 3-pointers. Momcilovic, Killyan Toure, and Joshua Jefferson each hit three shots from deep. Toure finished with 13 points, Blake Buchanan had 12, and Jefferson added 11. Iowa State shot an impressive 59% in the second half and 54% for the game.
The 23-point loss is Purdue’s largest nonconference home loss ever while ranked No. 1, according to ESPN Research. It also ties the record for the worst home loss by a top-ranked team.
Cyclones coach T.J. Otzelberger said his team played at its highest level. “We played our absolute best,” he said. “Against a great program like Purdue, you need that. We made enough shots and enough plays to keep control.”

Iowa State led 35–31 at halftime, then broke the game open early in the second half with an 11–0 run. Tamin Lipsey, Momcilovic, and Toure hit back-to-back-to-back threes to push the lead to 48–33. From there, the Cyclones kept extending the gap, at one point going up by 27 points.
Purdue struggled on offense all night. The Boilermakers shot only 41% and went 4-for-18 from three. They also missed eight free throws, going 6-for-14 from the line. Turnovers were another major problem, as Purdue gave the ball away 15 times.
“It was an avalanche,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “They took our spirit. Give Iowa State credit—they caused most of our problems.”
Braden Smith led Purdue with 11 points, while Oscar Cluff and Daniel Jacobsen each scored 10. Purdue’s top scorers, Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn, had a rough first half. Loyer went 1-for-5, and Kaufman-Renn missed his first six shots before finally scoring late in the half.
The loss ended Purdue’s streak of 36 straight nonconference home wins. Smith said the team has to learn from the defeat. “This sucks right now, but it’ll probably help us see how much better we need to get,” he said.
Purdue will try to bounce back when it hosts Minnesota on Wednesday. Iowa State returns home to face Iowa on Thursday in what should be a big rivalry matchup.
