March Madness 2022: History of No. 1 seeds to lose in second round after No. 1 Baylor falls to No. 8 North Carolina image

No. 8 North Carolina shocked No. 1 Baylor in Round 2 of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, defeating the Bears 93-86. The overtime victory came in spite of Baylor overcoming a 25-point deficit to send the game in overtime. Baylor's loss makes it the 22nd No. 1 seed to miss the Sweet 16, although there have been more instances in recent years.

In the last five tournaments, five No. 1 teams have missed the Sweet 16, with Baylor the latest victim. The defending national champions join 2021 Illinois from last year's tournament as getting beat in the round of 32.

This is the third time North Carolina has beaten a No. 1 as an eight seed, joining the 1990 team that beat Oklahoma and the 2000 team that beat Stanford.

Baylor had the added challenge of being a defending national champion. No defending national champ has advanced to the Sweet 16 since Duke managed to do so in 2016.

With these numbers in mind, Baylor becomes part of the 14 percent of No. 1 seeds that don't make it to the Sweet 16, and it makes the No. 1 seed record against No. 8 57-14. No. 1 is 66-7 against No. 9.

The Tar Heels enter the next round with much better odds than they had heading into Saturday, with No. 8 seeds being 7-3 in the Sweet 16 if they manage to make it there. North Carolina meet the winner of No. 5 Saint Mary's and No. 4 UCLA.
