The college basketball season is just over a week old. And already, a handful of players, with a majority of them freshmen, making a splash on the hardwood. Thanks to the NIL era, the days of the senior-based teams beating up others are all but over.

From upsets in Las Vegas to overtime thrillers in Blacksburg, the early slate of games has delivered an unforgettable first impression this season.

We'll see if the road to March Madness continues to be this eventful. Here are the top five performances thus far.

College basketball's top five preformances in first week

1. Koa Peat, Arizona (vs. No. 3 Florida)

The five-star freshman forward made a statement in his debut, posting 30 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in a stunning 93-87 win over defending national champion Florida. Peat shredded the Gators’ with his versatile offensive game, becoming the first Big 12 freshman since Michael Beasley to open his career with a 30-point outing.

2. Neoklis Avdalas, Virginia Tech (vs. Providence)

The 19-year-old Greek sensation known as “Neo” erupted for 33 points, six assists, and five rebounds in a 107-101 overtime win. The 6-foot-9 guard showed shades of Luka Dončić with his creativity, drilling five threes and dominating late in the game. After seeing his take off in the 2025 NBA Draft Combine, having him in Blacksburg will be a treat for fans.

JT Toppin

3. JT Toppin, Texas Tech (vs. Sam Houston)

The reigning Big 12 Player of the Year looked every bit the part, logging 31 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists in a 98-77 victory. A double-double is one heck of a way to return from an injury. The 6-foot-9 junior reasserted himself as a National Player of the Year favorite.

4. Caleb Wilson, North Carolina (vs. No. 19 Kansas)

In a matchup featuring multiple five-star freshmen, it was Wilson who stole the show with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting, plus seven rebounds and four steals, powering UNC past the Jayhawks 87-74. This was the Tar Heels' first true home win in 14 series games.

AJ Dybantsa

5. AJ Dybantsa, BYU (vs. Villanova)

Dybantsa’s debut with 21 points, six rebounds, and three steals lifted BYU past Villanova, 71-66. The 6-foot-8 forward scored six clutch points down the stretch, and added to why he’s a projected top-two NBA Draft pick. The Cougars will be a problem as the year drags on, especially in March.
