Arizona currently sits at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 with a perfect 12–0 record, but the Wildcats are far from alone among college basketball’s elite. Several unbeaten teams are right behind them, and any slip by Arizona could quickly open the door for a new top-ranked team. Here’s a look at the main challengers pushing for the No. 1 spot.

Michigan (11–0, No. 2)
Michigan may be Arizona’s biggest threat right now. Under first-year head coach Dusty May, the Wolverines have been dominant on both ends of the floor. After early close calls, Michigan exploded in Las Vegas, blowing out San Diego State, Auburn and Gonzaga by a combined 110 points. The Wolverines play fast, defend at an elite level and dominate inside, leading the nation in two-point shooting and two-point defense. Transfer Yaxel Lendeborg has emerged as a national Player of the Year candidate, giving Michigan star power to match its depth. A strong showing in upcoming Big Ten games could put Michigan in position to jump Arizona.

 

Iowa State (12–0, No. 3)
Iowa State’s resume is as impressive as anyone’s. The Cyclones turned heads in Las Vegas and then shocked the country with a road blowout of then-No. 1 Purdue. Known for tough defense under coach T.J. Otzelberger, Iowa State also brings elite shooting this season, ranking near the top nationally in three-point percentage. If the Cyclones navigate a tough Big 12 stretch that includes Kansas and Baylor, they could make a serious push for the top spot.

 

Vanderbilt (12–0, No. 11)
While Vanderbilt lacks a signature win, the Commodores are quietly one of the most efficient teams in the country. They rank in the top 15 nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency and have dominated quality opponents like Saint Mary’s, SMU and Wake Forest. A home matchup against Alabama could change national perception quickly. A big win there would put Vanderbilt firmly in the No. 1 conversation.

 

Nebraska (12–0, No. 13)
Nebraska owns the nation’s longest active winning streak and has proven it can beat strong competition. The Cornhuskers shoot the three at a high volume and take care of the ball, a dangerous combination in today’s game. With wins over Creighton, Wisconsin and Illinois, Nebraska is climbing fast. A victory over Michigan State would give the Huskers a major boost in the polls.

 

Miami (Ohio) (13–0, unranked)
Miami is unbeaten but faces questions due to a weak schedule. Still, the RedHawks’ offense has been explosive, averaging over 95 points per game. While they are a long shot for No. 1, wins against Bowling Green or Akron could force voters to take a closer look.

 

Arizona remains the team to beat, but with several undefeated and battle-tested teams close behind, the race for the No. 1 spot is far from settled.
