No. 7 Michigan battles No. 12 Gonzaga in early test image

TL;DR

  • Undefeated No. 7 Michigan faces No. 12 Gonzaga in the Players Era Festival championship final.
  • Both teams dominate the paint, with Gonzaga's Ike and Huff leading their offense.
  • Michigan's strong front court, featuring Lendeborg, Johnson Jr., and Mara, excels defensively.
  • The championship features two top defenses, with a $1 million prize for the winner.

Tonight, two undefeated heavyweights will face off in the Players Era Festival championship final in Las Vegas, with No. 7 Michigan (6-0) set to host No. 12 Gonzaga (7-0).

The two teams have proven most dominant at the Players Era Festival, primarily due to their prowess in controlling the paint.

This season, Gonzaga's Graham Ike and Braden Huff have played a crucial role in the Zags' achievements. During Tuesday's decisive 100-61 victory against Maryland, Huff contributed 20 points in 24 minutes of play, while Ike scored 13 points and secured six rebounds.

The two teams live and die in the paint, which has been key to Gonzaga's perfect start to the season. Huff leads the team in FG% knocking down 67 percent of his shots, averaging 16.0 points per game. Ike is not far behind, shooting 54 percent from the floor while leading the team in scoring.

Gonzaga's offensive prowess, ranking 17th nationally with an average of 94.0 points per game, is largely attributed to its dominant big men. These two players haven't faced a defense capable of limiting their scoring yet, though that might be tested against Michigan.

Michigan, fresh off a decisive 102-72 win against No. 21 Auburn, features a strong front court. Yaxel Lendeborg scored 17 points, and Morez Johnson Jr. Contributed 15. Similar to Gonzaga, their team is anchored by a formidable trio of big men: the 6'9 Lendeborg, the 6'9 Johnson Jr., and the 7'3 Aday Mara.

This group has excelled nationally at perimeter defense. Heading into Wednesday night's game, Michigan ranks third nationally, conceding just 35.2% of field goals, and will encounter their most formidable opponent yet. Gonzaga, similar to Michigan, emphasizes defense, giving up only 57.8 points per contest, placing them sixth nationally.

The Players Era Festival championship has featured some excellent contests, and this particular one might be the standout, pitting two top-tier defenses against each other.

The victorious team stands to gain an additional $1 million, and this matchup might offer a glimpse of future March events.
