Last season, the Los Angeles Lakers pulled off a stunning trade deadline move by acquiring Luka Doncic in a deal that caught everyone by surprise. Watching Doncic and LeBron James share the court was something special. However, it turns out that not all of the Lakers' stars enjoyed playing alongside Doncic.
“LeBron does not like playing with Luka. Reaves does not like playing with Luka… This is Luka’s team now,” John Gambadoro said.
Over the summer, it became increasingly clear that the Lakers now belong to Doncic—not James. For the first time in his career, LeBron is taking a backseat within the organization.
“He's still that good. I don't think it's his last year, but the fact that the Lakers did not discuss a 1-in-1, or a 2-in-1, or contracts beyond this year with him. They just let him sit back... that tells you a lot. It's not in his control with LA,” ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne said.
On Saturday, Doncic signed a lucrative three-year extension with the Lakers.
“Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, with a player option in 2028, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.

Following the extension, Doncic made headlines for reasons beyond basketball, announcing a generous initiative to support young athletes around the world.
“Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation,” Doncic posted.
Jay Williams had a one-word reaction to the announcement.
“Leadership,” Williams posted.
Williams clearly sees Doncic as a natural-born leader—someone stepping up not only for the team but also for the next generation. Doncic’s commitment to both the Lakers and young athletes shows he’s fully invested in the future. His decision to give back is a heartwarming act that reflects his growing influence both on and off the court.
