The San Antonio Spurs have a three-game winning streak this season against the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. That is a huge achievement, considering the Thunder have only lost five times, and three of those losses were against the Spurs.
It seems like the Spurs are the best candidate to usurp the Thunder, considering they have a promising squad with a generational superstar, Victor Wembanyama, at the forefront. Despite this superb success, Wembanyama himself does not want to get ahead of himself.
Wembanyama acknowledges the success, but is staying level-headed
The Spurs got a 117-102 win on Christmas Day against the defending champions. Despite playing under a minute restriction, Wembanyama did well by posting 19 points and 11 rebounds.
However, De'Aaron Fox was the star of the show with his 29 points to lead the Spurs to the victory. It was a superb result for the Spurs, as they got their third consecutive win against the Thunder. They have the Thunder's number, which is a unique achievement in a season they're on pace for a 70-win season.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson should be proud of his team for what they have done this season. They are now the second-seeded team in the Western Conference, which is impressive because they are above teams like the Denver Nuggets and the Houston Rockets.
Wembanyama has been the catalyst for the Spurs' success, but it seems like he does not want to celebrate too much. He wants to remain level-headed and focused on the task at hand.
"Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. We're focused on the rest of the season, it's very long, we're not even halfway through. I'm not sure if this takes far into the future... This is like a playoff series; we played them a few times in 10 days, maybe. We learned a lot on the tactical side, I don't want to say too much," Wembanyama said after the Christmas win.
The Spurs are moving forward with their heads held high as they are the only team to beat the Thunder this season more than once. The Portland Trail Blazers and the Minnesota Timberwolves have wins against the Thunder, but they have not dominated the defending champions like San Antonio has.
It will be an interesting season ahead because it is not halfway done. However, the Spurs are still focused on succeeding because they don't want to let this dominance against the Thunder get to their heads.
