San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama was recently diagnosed with a calf strain, sidelining him for the next 2–3 weeks.

However, Wembanyama hasn’t been placed under any strict restrictions from basketball activities and appeared to be in good shape when he was seen working on the sideline during practice Tuesday afternoon.

 

The 7’4” big man has dealt with more than his share of setbacks in his first three seasons, including blood clot issues that shut him down for the remainder of the 2024–25 regular season. He played just 46 games.

This latest injury is far from what San Antonio—or Wemby—had hoped for. He had been averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks on 50.2% shooting from the field, all career highs.

Wembanyama hasn’t expressed any discomfort, according to Spurs insider Michael C. Wright, who noted that Vic “feels fine.” After the Spurs’ 123–110 win on Sunday night against the Sacramento Kings, Wembanyama was spotted with a leg sleeve above his calf but remained in good spirits.

 

There’s also a chance the Spurs get Wembanyama back earlier than originally projected, as he looks agile and is showing no signs of limitation. Over the next three weeks, San Antonio will play 11 games, with an additional week off due to the NBA Cup. If the Spurs choose to wait until then, Wembanyama could return without jeopardizing his award or All-NBA eligibility.

For the time being, the Spurs will likely start veteran center Kelly Olynyk in Wemby’s place, with Bismack Biyombo seeing minutes off the bench. Expect both to take on increased roles, as recovery timelines for calf strains can vary significantly depending on the player.

Wemby has become a social media phenomenon—whether it’s turning his ankle sideways only to return moments later or showcasing his unusual pregame routines. Needless to say, the Spurs are monitoring his situation with an even closer lens than usual.
