The San Antonio Spurs lead West Group C of the NBA cup with a record of 3-1 and a +26 point differential.
De’Aaron Fox has been leading the team without Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle during the in-season tournament, and now Spurs fans have received some good news about both.
Castle plans to play on Monday, according to Michael C. Wright of ESPN, while Wembanyama was a full participant in Sunday’s practice, said Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News.
Wembanyam has been out since November 16 with a calf strain that he has treated carefully. His original timeline was a few weeks, so he seems to be on track with his recovery.
Wembanyama began his third season averaging 26.2 points per game, 12.9 rebounds per game, 4 assists, and 3.6 blocks per game.
Wembanyama has missed 10 games so far with his calf injury and will miss his eleventh Monday night against the New Orleans Pelicans.
It was rumored he would not be back in time to help the Spurs compete in the NBA cup, but things may be different now with this recent update. If Victor is looking to qualify for awards, he can only miss six more games this season. It is likely that the Spurs will remain cautious when he returns, and may even sit out a game if the team is scheduled for a back-to-back.
McDonald reported that Wembanyama should be considered ‘iffy’ to play on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
