The San Antonio Spurs put the NBA world on notice when they defeated the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder three times in the span of a month, but they haven’t done much since.

A team that once sat atop the NBA’s weekly power rankings continues to fall by the week. NBA.com writer John Schumann released Week 15’s power rankings and had the Spurs falling from No. 3 to No. 4.

San Antonio played four games last week, winning two against the Utah Jazz and dropping the other two to the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans

Schumann’s Spurs rationale

“The Spurs are just 8-8 since they beat the Thunder for the third time on Christmas Day, a stretch that includes losses to the Jazz, Grizzlies and Pelicans,” Schumann wrote. “But they’re still in second place in the West and one of four teams (all in the Western Conference) that rank in the top 10 on both ends of the floor.”

This week the Spurs take on Houston and the Charlotte Hornets on the road and host the Orlando Magic

The Spurs will have a chance to avenge last week’s loss in Houston when they return to the Toyota Center on Wednesday,” Schumann added. “They’re 8-7 (5-0 at home or on a neutral court, 3-7 on the road) in games played between the top seven teams in the West.”
