Spurs more likely to be 'patient and opportunistic' in mid-season trade discussions per insider image

The San Antonio Spurs seem ahead of schedule in terms of their team development. The squad features a handful of lottery draft picks over the last few years, none more impactful than third-year star Victor Wembanyama.

Armed with multiple draft picks over the next few seasons and young talent to shop, the Spurs can make any move they want right now, including making a Godfather offer to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

But according to one insider, San Antonio is content standing pat and letting their young players develop without making an all-in move.

Spurs not expected to make mid-season trade splash

According to Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal, the Spurs are content with their 21-7 record, good for No. 2 in the Western Conference. They won't be sacrificing future capital and making a run for any of the large trade candidates this season.

"San Antonio’s run to the NBA Cup final provided a glimpse of what the roster can become once fully healthy and developed, but league sources who have spoken with DallasHoopsJournal.com have become skeptical that the Spurs will pursue a splashy midseason move that compromises long-term flexibility. The franchise continues to prioritize internal growth around its young core while preserving future assets," wrote Afseth.

"'They’re not going to sit around being satisfied, but I don’t see them making a move like trading for Giannis,' one source said. 'There are more reasonable options out there. They can be patient and opportunistic.'"

If San Antonio is trying to follow in the footsteps of another Western Conference powerhouse, their rival Oklahoma City Thunder, they would be wise to stand pat and not ship out any of their young talent for older stars.

After all, the Thunder were on a similar track to the Spurs before their rise into NBA champions.
