After the San Antonio Spurs suffered a 109-108 loss to the Golden State Warriors last Friday, many were concerned with the health of the franchise’s 21-year-old star Victor Wembanyama.
The former No. 1 overall pick endured a calf injury during the contest and for precautionary reasons, San Antonio elected to sideline him for their Sunday night clash against the Sacramento Kings.
On Monday, the Spurs received a new injury update on Wembenyama, and it was devastating for the franchise, to say the least.
“San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has a left calf strain and is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks,” ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on X/Twitter.
While it’s great that De’Aaron Fox is back in the Spurs lineup after missing the start of the season, it’s unfortunate that the Kentucky product won’t get to share the floor with the 7-foot-4 two-way stud immediately.
Wembanyama’s ability to operate like a guard on the perimeter, showcase his low-post skill set during post-up opportunities, and protect the rim better than every other center in the league makes life easier for teammates.
There’s no question that San Antonio’s offensive and defensive dynamic will change with Wembanyama, who’s averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks on the 9-4 Spurs, on the bench for the next couple of weeks.
