News broke Wednesday the Philadelphia 76ers are re-signing star guard Quentin Grimes to the one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer.
Grimes thrived after being dealt to the 76ers, as he averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists on 46.9% shooting and 37.3% from three-point range in 28 games. These numbers obviously make him worth well more than what he signed on for, but it was the best option for his future after the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
This is unsurprisingly far less than Grimes was hoping to make with the 76ers moving forward, as ESPN's Shams Charania reported the 25-year-old's team at one point requested an absurd annual amount from the organization.
"After Grimes' side indicated it desired a contract in the $30 million range early in free agency and then a deal at around $20 million to $25 million," Charania wrote. "The two sides never found traction on a new agreement this offseason ahead of Wednesday's 11:59 p.m. ET deadline for the qualifying offer."
Grimes will hit unrestricted free agency next summer when a handful of organizations have a greater amount of cap space.
Given how many standout guards Philadelphia has on their roster, this was likely in their best interest. Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, and VJ Edgecombe appear to be the future of their backcourt, so it's tough to say how Grimes could squeeze his way into that mix.
The issue now for Philadelphia is the former Dallas Mavericks guard can veto any trades the front office attempts to make next season. 76ers fans need to hope the team is comfortably in title contention, so Grimes can help them while he's still around.
