After going undefeated in the NBA Cup Group Stage, the Oklahoma City Thunder entered Wednesday night's quarterfinals against the Phoenix Suns looking to earn a trip to Las Vegas.
They entered the matchup on a 15-game win streak while Phoenix had lost three of its last five games, trying to stay afloat in the absence of both Devin Booker and Jalen Green.
Without those two star guards, it wasn't much of a contest.
Oklahoma City outscored the Suns by 10 or more points in every quarter and at one point extended its lead to 53. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren combined for 52 as the Thunder ultimately won by 49, 138-89.
With the victory, Oklahoma City extended its streak to 16 games, but also tied a historic record.
The Thunder are now tied with the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors for best 25-game start to a season, with both teams reaching the 24-1 mark. Although the Thunder lost their first game of the season early on, they've now caught up to Golden State's all-time pace.
Additionally, they've broken the record for the highest point differential through a team's first 25 games (+437). This is 90 points higher than the second-highest team on the list, the 2007-08 Boston Celtics.
After being asked about OKC's historic start, head coach Mark Daigneault was brief in his response.
"All of that's great, but none of that matters Saturday," he said.
Saturday marks the beginning of the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas, as the Thunder are set to take on the San Antonio Spurs.
