Morant and Wembanyama's absences put focus on secondary players in Tuesday's game image

The Memphis Grizzlies (4-10) and San Antonio Spurs (9-4) go into Tuesday night’s Western Conference matchup at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio shorthanded across the board due to a bevy of injuries, highlighted by Ja Morant and Victor Wembanyama’s absences.

Morant and Wembanyama will each miss at least two weeks with calf injuries. Even with the losses of key talents, other players aim to step up in their absences.

The Spurs aim to look at guard De’Aaron Fox as the main catalyst on offense to set the table, but also to be aggressive in finding his shot on the perimeter and/or the paint.

Fox comes off back-to-back, double-double outings with 24 points and 10 assists against the Golden State Warriors on Nov. 14 and 28 points and 11 assists against the Sacramento Kings on Nov. 16.

Devin Vassell aims to step up as the secondary option with three of the San Antonio’s top four scorers (Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper) out for the Memphis game.

Vassell dished out a season-high seven assists, to go along with 16 points in the 13-point win over the Kings.

Playing primarily off the bench to start the season, Coward has averaged 14.0 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game and on track to start against the Spurs.

Jaren Jackson Jr. Co-leads the team with 17.9 points per game and only one of two Memphis players to start all 14 games this season.
