Who will step up for the Knicks after Jalen Brunson's injury? image

The New York Knicks are preparing for life without star guard Jalen Brunson, who exited the team’s last game against the Orlando Magic with a Grade 1 ankle sprain. Ahead of Friday’s NBA Cup matchup with the Miami Heat, the Knicks officially ruled Brunson out, leaving New York without its leading scorer and offensive engine.

Brunson entered Wednesday ranked 10th in the league in scoring—mirroring his finish last season—and remains one of the NBA’s most efficient high-usage guards. With his 28 points per game now absent from the lineup, the Knicks will need several players to help absorb the offensive load.

The most likely candidate is Karl-Anthony Towns. With more than 20 points suddenly vacant, Towns becomes the natural focal point. He is averaging 20.2 points per game, a number that could rise as he sees increased touches and usage.

Next in line is Jordan Clarkson, the former Sixth Man of the Year. Clarkson signed with New York knowing his role would shrink, and that has shown in his numbers. He is attempting a career-low 7.2 shots per game and averaging just 9.1 points, far below his career high of 18.4. With Brunson sidelined, Clarkson is well-positioned to take on a heavier scoring burden, something he has historically excelled at.

The Knicks may also turn to Miles McBride, who is expected to see expanded minutes at point guard. While head coach Mike Brown has not confirmed his starting plans, McBride is the clear internal option. If given extended run, he should exceed his current averages of 8.4 points and 2.6 assists, providing needed playmaking stability.

As New York awaits Brunson’s return, its depth will now be tested—and its ability to stay afloat could hinge on how quickly these three options respond.
