Since being implemented into the starting lineup due to the calf injury of Rui Hachimura, first-year Los Angeles Laker Jake LaRavia has been on a tear.
It took the young Laker some time to get used to the new role, contributing just nine points while shooting 3-of-9 from the field in the Dec. 30 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
In the two games to begin the new year, LaRavia has been a large factor in the Lakers' most recent success.
Lakers' Jake LaRavia is making a case for a long-term starting role
LaRavia, 24, is coming off back-to-back 20+ point games, putting up 21 points, nine rebounds, and two assists while adding a block and two steals on defense in the Lakers' 128-121 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 2.
He continued the hot streak, following it up with a 26-point, five-rebound, and four-assist performance in Los Angeles' Jan. 4 win over the Grizzlies.
If he keeps this up, LaRavia could be making a run for a long-term starting role over Rui Hachimura moving forward.
It seems that his three-point shooting has come back to life as well. After shooting below 30% from beyond the arc in December and November. So far in January, LaRavia has hit 7-of-16 (43.8%) from three.
The way he also mixes a strong defensive presence for the Lakers has shown that he deserves an increased role in Los Angeles' system.
Once Rui Hachimura returns from the calf injury, head coach JJ Redick will have a big decision to make in the starting lineup.
