Rui Hachimura’s selfless mindset boosting Lakers: 'I just want to help the team win' image

The Los Angeles Lakers entered Friday night against the Dallas Mavericks, in search of a clean 4-0 sweep in NBA Cup Group Play. They did just that, pulling away in the second half to secure a 10-point victory. Los Angeles' starters did the heavy lifting as the team recorded only 12 bench points for the game. Austin Reaves, Luka Doncic and Deandre Ayton led they way, combining for 90 points.

LeBron James and Rui Hachimura were also in double-figures. With James now healthy, along with Gabe Vincent who returned from an ankle injury, many wondered whether or not Redick would start a traditional point guard like Vincent or Marcus Smart, as opposed to keeping Hachimura in the lineup. With that in mind, Hachimura was the fifth starter on Friday night, with Vincent leading all bench players with 23 minutes. However, it's worth noting that Marcus Smart did not play due to back spasms.

Hachimura scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds on 5-for-13 shooting including 4-for-8 from three-point range. Before the game, Hachimura spoke to reporters on his role and usage with the team.

“I’m not trying to be a superstar. … I’m just trying to help the team win - whatever they ask. I like my role here … I’m really trying to win the championship with this team. … So, I’m happy.”

Hachimura has played his role well so far this season. In 17 games, he's averaging a career high 14.9 points to go along with 3.9 rebounds. His improved three-point shooting has been most impressive, as Hachimura has averaged 48.3% on long range attempts.

Now 14-4, Los Angeles is second in the Western Conference. They'll host the San Antonio Spurs on Dec. 10 in the NBA Cup quarterfinals.
