The Los Angeles Lakers have some of the league's best players, but they have plenty of issues on the defensive side of the game. Luka Doncic is the Lakers' superstar, who can put up amazing statistics every night.

Unfortunately, he does have some weaknesses in his game, especially on defense. The Lakers' front office should expect this, as they need defenders around him to maximize the team's all-around potential. Carmelo Anthony and P.J. Tucker discussed the importance of veteran defenders.

Carmelo Anthony knows the value of having veteran defenders

As one of the biggest franchises in the league, the Lakers are always expected to be competitive. They have some of the NBA's best players in Doncic and LeBron James. Austin Reaves is also present on this team as a potential All-Star this season.

Unfortunately, not all of their stars are positive defenders. James was once one of the league's very best, but his age naturally makes him more focused on the offensive side of the game. Doncic is a lot younger, but everyone knows that he's never been the best defender.

As players with lengthy resumes, Anthony and Tucker gave their thoughts on the value of having defenders. Veterans, especially, are important because they have the savvy and experience that could close the gap against the talented players.

"When the 3rd/4th options see Luka, their eyes are big... This is where the guys like PJ, guys like Udonis Haslem, those guys on the bench can really hold Luka accountable. Has to be somebody on that bench he respects," Anthony said on 7PM in Brooklyn about the Lakers' defense.

Everyone understands that having Doncic means not having the best defense. However, a team must build around that knowledge. By getting positive defenders, they could be the best team in the league with a Doncic-led offense and a defense that masks his issues.

Getting Marcus Smart was a good start for the Lakers, but they need more. They have been heavily linked to players like Herb Jones, who could serve that purpose, but it is still up to J.J. Redick to put it all together on the court.
