Given that the Los Angeles Lakers is among the top teams in the NBA early on, it'll be compelling to observe Rob Pelinka's intentions regarding the trade deadline. 

In addition, the Lakers have several chances to acquire new players through the draft, presently possessing the 28th overall selection according to Jonathan Wasserman's Bleacher Report mock draft.

The Lakers have several potential avenues, possibly even trading that draft selection on draft night, but Wasserman projected them taking JT Toppin, a power forward from Texas Tech.

Last May, scouts had JT Toppin pegged as a first-round talent. He's now in his junior year, having scored over 30 points in two of his initial three games, overpowering defenses with his potent combination of physical strength and ability to finish near the basket.

“Even if it's difficult to envision pathways to upside for a 6'9" post player, there will be teams that see value and a high floor based on his consistent production, interior scoring instincts, unteachable short-range touch and offensive rebounding,” he wrote. 

While some people assume Toppin and Obi Toppin are related, they are not. Their shared position as power forwards in college and their considerable talent are purely coincidental. 

Toppin, at 20 years old, is admittedly a bit older, but not so much that it should present a significant issue for The Lakers or other franchises.
