It’s no secret that Sacramento Kings star forward Domantas Sabonis is regarded as a potential trade target for the Golden State Warriors.
Al Horford isn’t getting the job done for the Dubs in the frontcourt, leaving the organization no choice but to look for an early-season or mid-season upgrade.
However, Blue Man Hoop’s Peter O’Keefe recently sent a stern 11-word warning to Golden State about potentially acquiring Sabonis before the trade deadline
“Warriors must avoid a trade for Domantas Sabonis at all costs,” O’Keefe wrote Monday.
“Sabonis would certainly fill some of Golden State's concerns, but he'd also open up quite a few that makes this potential trade package -- and the two years, $95 million left on his deal -- not overly worth it”.
“How does a starting front court of Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green and Sabonis work from a spacing standpoint? The answer is not well from a theoretical perspective, even if the high IQ nature of all three players could reduce some of the complete lack of shooting among the trio.”
“While a strong rebounder, Sabonis is viewed as a defensive liability, which doesn't particularly fit Golden State's ethos.”
While Keefe made several valid points regarding Sabonis’ noticeable shortcomings, the Dubs must not lose sight of the fact that they aren't a ton of game-changing big men on the trade market this season.
Sabonis, Anthony Davis, and Lauri Markkanen highlight the short list of low-post threats who will attract plenty of attention from contenders.
Additionally, Golden State must also be mindful that each of those standout big men has their share of flaws.
Sabonis is a below-average perimeter shooter and defender, Davis is as injury-prone as they come, and Markkanen, who’s been in the league since 2017, has to prove he can lead a franchise to the postseason.
Simply put, with the Warriors’ frontcourt options being limited and far from perfect, it would be ludicrous for them not to consider trading for Sabonis at the very least.
