The Golden State Warriors are expected to be active before the upcoming trade deadline. Could they target the Dallas Mavericks star, Anthony Davis, who is expected to garner interest on the market?
A recent report from ‘The Stein Line’ suggests that while the Warriors have a “longstanding fondness” for Davis, there doesn’t seem to be a pathway to getting a deal done at this time.
“I’m told that they have indeed had some internal discussions about pursuing him, but they do not appear to be actively doing so six-ish weeks out from the deadline,” Marc Stein reports.
“Golden State, for starters, has no realistic pathway to acquire Davis unless it is also willing to part with Jimmy Butler or franchise fixture Draymond Green. I'm likewise told that Davis' contract — with potentially two years still left on it if the 32-year-old exercises his $62.7 million player option in 2027-28 — and the injury woes he has endured since becoming a Maverick have thrust a measure of pause into Golden State's deliberations.”
Davis is a talented big with plenty of on-court value, but he comes with his fair share of baggage.
For starters, the 32-year-old 10-time All-Star won’t come cheap. He’s making a lot of money still, and as mentioned above, the Warriors would have to part ways with a key player just to match salaries.
Beyond the cost, Davis’ injury history is simply scary for any interested suitor. The Dallas Mavericks took the gamble last year and couldn’t keep the forward/center on the court healthy.
Davis landed on the Mavs’ roster in early February last year. He played his first game on February 8, and didn’t plan another until March 24. He finished the season with just nine appearances during the regular season.
The 2025-2026 season hasn’t gone much better. After five games, Davis missed multiple weeks of action. He returned for a stretch in early December, but now he’s back on the injury report with a groin injury. He is expected to miss multiple games.
This season, Davis has appeared in 16 games for the Mavs. He has posted averages of 20.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, and 1.3 steals. The production is there, but the availability remains an issue.
The Warriors would be wise to do their due diligence, but steering clear seems to be a smarter bet at this time. As for Davis, he’s expected to have an active market before the February deadline, leaving him as a name to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
