The Boston Celtics have waived Hayden Gray, a rookie guard out of UC San Diego, before the official start of training camp. Gray was signed after going undrafted to an Exhibit 10 contract, a type of deal that allows players to compete for roster spots or be redirected to a team’s G League affiliate.

While Gray won’t be part of the main camp roster, the move doesn’t mark the end of his time in Boston. As is common with Exhibit 10 deals, Gray is expected to join the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League team, under an affiliate deal. He’ll have the opportunity to showcase his skills in hopes of earning more, possibly a two-way contract or even short-term NBA opportunities.

What this means for the Celtics roster dynamics

Waiving Hayden Gray reduces the number of Exhibit 10 signees heading into camp. Others still under similar deals include Ron Harper Jr., Jalen Bridges, and Kendall Brown.  Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics' two-way slots are occupied by Max Shulga, RJ Luis Jr., and Amari Williams, leaving limited room for movement unless a two-way deal or standard contract opens up.

Gray’s departure highlights the competitive cutdown process every team goes through ahead of the season. Exhibit 10 players often face long odds, but their contracts are structured so that excelling in the G League can lead to bonuses (up to about $85,300) or future call-ups.  For Gray, this is likely the path forward: development in Maine, staying ready, and hoping to catch Boston’s attention.
