The Boston Celtics aren’t waiting until the end of training camp to move on from certain players.
On Wednesday, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto revealed that the Celtics are cutting ties with a 6-foot-7 forward two months after trading for him.
The Boston Celtics are waiving two-way player RJ Luis,” Scotto wrote on X/Twitter. "Boston acquired Luis from the Utah Jazz in exchange for two second-round picks and Georges Niang. Luis was recently Big East Player of the Year for St. John’s.”
Luis had the option of returning to St. John’s (or transferring to another program) for his senior season, but elected to forgo his final year of eligibility and declare for the 2025 NBA Draft.
While not a great perimeter shooter (he finished his collegiate career with a 31.6% three-point shooting percentage), Luis managed to land a post-draft contract with the Jazz thanks to his explosive vertical athleticism and defensive upside.
However, Luis didn’t last long in Utah, as the Jazz traded him to the Celtics well before training camp.

The 22-year-old only averaged 3.2 points and 0.6 rebounds in three preseason games with Boston, making the organization’s mid-October decision to waive him unsurprising.
Luckily for Luis, though, his NBA career is just beginning, and chances are he’ll receive more opportunities to make a lasting impression in the big leagues.
