The Atlanta Hawks are in the news for their recent Trae Young saga, but the team continues shifting around pieces on the roster as we close out the first week of the new year.

On Wednesday, it was reported that the Hawks are cutting ties with their recently-added big man, Malik Williams. The center was taking up one of their two-way slots on the roster.

On December 23, the Hawks officially announced the addition of Williams. He was expected to continue playing for the G League squad, the College Park Skyhawks.

Although the Hawks had Williams under contract, he never got a call-up before getting waived. If he’s not claimed, he could continue playing under the Hawks’ affiliate in the developmental league.

At this point, Williams only has NBA experience with the Toronto Raptors. During the 2023-2024 NBA season, he appeared in seven games. He averaged 15.3 minutes on the court, producing 2.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Williams’ pro career has been mostly spent in the G League. He started with the Miami Heat’s affiliate in Sioux Falls, before joining College Park in 2025.

Prior to the NBA, Williams attended Louisville for college. He played for four seasons, starting in 37 out of 95 games. The center averaged 6.5 points and 4.9 rebounds for Louisville before going undrafted in 2022.

The Hawks will be back on the court on Wednesday night to face the New Orleans Pelicans at home. The Hawks are 17-21, hoping to begin turning their season around after struggling over their past 10 games.
