The Washington Nationals have added to their MLB pitching rotation on Tuesday.

They did it by signing a left-hander who has pitched the past three seasons in Japan, Foster Griffin.

It's an intriguing add after Griffin had a lot of reported interest across baseball. In the end, he appears to take a solid opportunity to get real starting pitching action in the nation's capital.

Who is Foster Griffin?

Griffin is a 30-year old left-handed pitcher.

He was a first-round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals out of high school in the Orlando area in 2014.

Is Foster Griffin good?

Foster Griffin has taken a winding path to this contract with the Nationals.

He pitched 8.0 MLB innings in two seasons, split between the Royals in 2020 and the Blue Jays in 2022.

After 2022, Griffin left for Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball.

In three seasons in the NPB, Griffin had a combined 2.57 ERA. That included a 1.52 ERA in 2025.

That earned him another chance in the bigs.

Foster Griffin contract details

Griffin has signed a one-year contract with the Nationals for $5.5 million, according to Robert Murray.

That's not a major investment. It's enough to get Griffin on board, but it doesn't force the Nats to commit to him in a major role.

If Griffin looks like the guy who had an ERA in the 1s a season ago in Japan, the Nats will certainly give him his chance.
