Man, that was painful.

Washington Nationals pitcher Trevor Williams had a nightmare of a first inning against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon.

In fact, he threw more first-inning pitches than any pitcher in MLB in the last decade, per Codify Baseball.

How many? Williams threw 54 pitches in the first inning.

Goodness gracious.

He gave up six runs in the frame, and somehow, his day wasn't done.

Williams finished three innings and allowed seven runs in total.

It was the first game of a doubleheader, so the Nationals sort of needed the veteran to give them a bit more length.

Almost never would another pitcher be left in that long in the first inning. Both for arm health reasons, and because of the obvious ongoing struggles, a call to the bullpen would get made.

Williams had to wear this one, though, and he did for 54 whole pitches. Ouch.
