The Washington Nationals removed Jorge Alfaro from the 40-man roster knowing what the outcome might be.

On Friday, Alfaro cleared waivers and took the expected path, opting for free agency.

The Nationals' communication department announced the news at about noon on Friday.

Alfaro played in 14 games for the Nats in 2025. He had 10 hits in 39 at bats (.256 average) with two doubles and three RBI.

He hadn't played in MLB at all in 2024.

Before, that, Alfaro had been a top prospect in the Phillies' system. He made it to the majors with Philadelphia, then went to play for the Miami Marlins.

From there, Alfaro was moved to the San Diego Padres, then the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox.

Finally this season, Alfaro made it back to MLB with the Nats.

He's a career.253 hitter with 48 home runs in 510 career games.

At 32 years old, Alfaro can probably still get a contract somewhere, likely a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. He'll have to prove he belongs, which is something he's had to do a lot of lately.

It just doesn't appear that will be with the Nationals.
