The Toronto Blue Jays currently have their sights set on an American League Pennant, but the team's front office will have a lot of decisions to make once the offseason hits.
The rumor mill surrounding certain players is already starting to turn as the MLB season will be over in a little over a month. The offseason is inevitable, and the Blue Jays might be losing some production in their starting staff, and may want to turn to the trade market for a major move.
One name that has reportedly been out there is Sonny Gray of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Cardinals may be active in the trade market
With a transition of power looming in the Cardinals' front office, it would not be a shock to anyone to see multiple of the team's key pieces being moved ahead of the 2026 season. Chaim Bloom is set to be the new president of baseball operations.
Sonny Gray recently sat down with Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and talked about his future:
"Whether I do decide that I want to go somewhere – whether that actually happens – I don’t have complete control of that. Obviously, I have control of where I can’t go or don’t go. I’m going to be 36. It’s going to be my 14th season. Last year of my contract for this. I don’t know what the future holds for me."
Gray has a full no-trade clause, so it will ultimately be up to him where he wants to go, but as an aging starter, Toronto might be a great fit.
The three-time all-star, Sonny Gray, did have a regression in production this year as a starter, but he is a tenured veteran in MLB who can be a third-fourth starter in a rotation. He pitched 180.2 innings this season and posted an ERA of 4.28 and 201 strikeouts.
Gray had a few clunker starts that didn't help his ERA, but with over 200 strikeouts this season and less than 40 walks, he proved he still has a lot left in the pitching tank.
It will be a big storyline to follow during the offseason, and whether or not St. Louis decides to move on from Sonny Gray.
