The Toronto Blue Jays have had a busy offseason so far, signing Dylan Cease to a $210 million deal and also Cody Ponce to a $30 million deal. They've also been linked to Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette, among many other free agent options.
Heading into the Rule 5 Draft, the Blue Jays kept up that momentum by making three selections, two of which are minor league additions, while the third, most important one, is an interesting risk to take.
As MLB.com shared the full Rule 5 Draft result, the headliner for the Blue Jays is 6'3'' right-hander Spencer Miles. He's 25 years old, and most interestingly, has not pitched at a level higher than Single-A in his professional career. He's now on the MLB roster.
Blue Jays take risk in Rule 5 Draft with inexperienced pitcher
At 10th overall, the Blue Jays selected Miles, who was once from the San Francisco Giants organization. Miles never broached the Giants' top prospects, and after missing significant time over the last few years, wasn't protected by the Giants from the Rule 5 Draft.
In his minor league career, Miles has appeared in just 10 total games. Back in 2022, he made five appearances, all as a reliever.
Across 7.1 innings pitched, he recorded a 3.68 ERA with 12 strikeouts and three walks. Two of those five appearances came in Single-A, where he had a 6.23 ERA in 4.1 innings pitched.

Two years later, in 2024, Miles was back on the mound, this time as a starter and reliever. He pitched 7.1 innings again, this time all in Rookie ball. His 4.91 ERA left a lot to be desired, and after not pitching in 2025, he was selected by the Blue Jays in the Rule 5 Draft.
Miles is a big risk for the Blue Jays, and while the consequences of missing on Miles aren't a big deal, it's still noteworthy that the Blue Jays are taking a chance on someone who has not once pitched in Double-A or Triple-A.
The other two selections are outfielder Hedbert Perez from the Milwaukee Brewers farm system and Travis Kuhn from the Detroit Tigers farm system. They're part of the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft, so they aren't on the MLB roster right away.
