The Toronto Blue Jays have been extremely active in free agency. After falling short in their first World Series appearance in over 30 seasons, the Blue Jays front office is working hard to make sure they reach the Fall Classic once again.
Moves to ensure that have been the signings of the flame-throwing Dylan Cease and KBO MVP, right-hander Cody Ponce. That does mean, though, that someone may have to be pushed out of the starting rotation and Wednesday gave us a clear picture of who that may be.
According to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic, Toronto is open to trading right-hander Jose Berrios. Berrios has spent the past 4 1/2 seasons with the organization, posting a 4.09 ERA with 702 strikeouts across 139 appearances and 790 1/3 innings pitched.
Last season was a bit of a struggle for Berrios, as he posted a 4.17 ERA and 1.3 WAR, both his lowest totals since the 2022 season, his first full year with the Blue Jays. He allowed 56 walks, his most since 2018, as well as allowing 26 home runs, the fourth consecutive season he's allowed 25-plus homers.
It would appear that going to a pitcher friendly ballpark would benefit Berrios. According to Statcast, Rogers Centre ranked No. 13 last season in ballpark factor. Teams with home ballparks near the bottom of that list that could use pitching help include the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners.
A move to a ballpark that yields less home runs could be what Berrios needs to get his career trajectory back on the correct path after a disappointing 2025 season.
