The Toronto Blue Jays were so close.
The Dodgers secured their second consecutive championship in Game 7 of the World Series, defeating Toronto in extra innings and leaving the Blue Jays with a disappointing second-place finish.
Following that defeat, most forecasters have indicated Toronto will make a significant move this offseason, though likely only one.
Ultimately, they committed $500 million to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. In April. What's the remaining financial capacity?
The Athletic's Andy McCullough doesn't share that perspective. This week, he published a fresh piece predicting which free agent each MLB team will sign. He named one player for 29 of the franchises. For The Blue Jays, however, he predicted they would acquire two players.
McCullough's forecast indicates the Blue Jays will reacquire Bo Bichette and also secure Kyle Tucker.
"The rare, two-for-one special for the low, low price of somewhere north of $500 million. Maybe north of $600 million," McCullough writes. "But the Blue Jays should go for it. The team came within a hair’s breadth of winning the World Series, and by all indications, owner Edward Rogers is willing to spend to keep the team’s championship window open. Toronto has played the bridesmaid for years in free agency, falling short on Ohtani, Soto and others, but I think this is the year the tide turns. Not only should the Blue Jays retain homegrown star Bichette, but they should win the bidding war for Tucker, a dynamic, two-way player who can complement face-of-the-franchise Vladimir Guerrero Jr."
As McCullough noted, this is truly the Blue Jays' opportunity. Momentum favors them. They appear to be a team that's enjoyable and thrilling to play for. They've ignited the city's enthusiasm, and an ownership group that undoubtedly aims to overcome that final obstacle.
They missed out a couple years ago on Shohei Ohtani.
Now's their chance to not miss out again.
It'd be fantastic if Bichette returned. He progressed through the farm system alongside Vladdy and feels at home in Toronto.
Adding Tucker to the mix would be incredible. He's the top free agent available and likely will be a solid hitter for years to come.
The combo deal? That would be how the Blue Jays could make the ultimate statement.
