The Toronto Blue Jays made the World Series, and in the aftermath, even following a loss, have committed to spending big this winter to get back to the World Series and win it in 2026 and beyond.
One of their first moves to prove they're serious contenders was to sign Dylan Cease to a $210 million contract. It's an expensive deal, but for the next seven years, Toronto will have a consistent and reliable starting pitcher in the rotation.
A few days after the deal was officially finalized, the Blue Jays revealed Cease's uniform number. And just like how the Blue Jays are making big changes, Cease's uniform number brings about a one-of-a-kind Blue Jays uniform in franchise history.
Dylan Cease will wear a uniform number never worn before in Blue Jays history
"The FIRST player to wear Number 84 in Blue Jays history: Dylan Cease," the Blue Jays revealed on Twitter/X.

Cease will be the first player to wear a jersey with "84" on the back in Blue Jays history. With all of the players that come through the organization, it's somewhat surprising to see a uniform number never worn before get its first recipient.
But, thanks to Toronto only retiring two jersey numbers, 42 for Jackie Robinson and 32 for Roy Halladay, there are plenty of iconic numbers available for the taking.
84 isn't the only jersey never worn in Blue Jays history. 75, 76, 78, 80, 81, 82, 83, 86, 87, 89, 94, 95, 96, 97, and 98 have never been on the back of a Blue Jays player's jersey.
There are now 16 jersey numbers left without at least one player to wear them in Blue Jays history, after the 17th was taken by Cease with the number 84.
His number neighbor, 85, is only worn by Alejandro Kirk, and the new pitcher-catcher duo will see plenty of action in 2026 and beyond, as number 84 will be throwing to number 85 often in the coming seasons.
