There are still plenty of moving parts left on the pitching market, and the New York Mets are right in the bulk of it. As they consider different options, familiar names have begun to surface, including guys who have pitched in New York.
Jon Heyman recently suggested that the Mets could head toward a reunion with a former pitcher as they sort through options. According to Heyman, New York is linked to Chris Bassitt, the Toronto Blue Jays free agent.
“Ranger Suárez and Chris Bassitt would be the first calls here. Suárez is consistently effective and even better in October (1.46 postseason ERA). Bassitt was a very good Met, and he’s the kind of clubhouse plus needed,” he wrote.
Bassitt’s previous stint with the Mets left a strong impression, both on the field and behind the scenes, per Heyman.
He provides great innings and, as I’ve pointed out before, has made at least 30 starts in each of the past four seasons.
Not that the Mets are being cheap, but there’s also a sense that they don’t want to spend a ton. The veteran right-hander shouldn’t be too expensive.
While nothing guarantees a reunion, the interest itself is important. The Mets are looking for pitchers who understand the environment and can get outs. That’s why Bassitt’s name continues to come up.
