Alex Bregman eyed as a backup plan for Toronto, if unable to sign other top names image

After falling in Game 7 of the World Series last season, the Toronto Blue Jays have been arguably the most aggressive team to begin the 2025 offseason.

They paid top-dollar for Dylan Cease, signed Cody Ponce, have met with Kyle Tucker and have reported interest in one of the premier relievers available on the market.

That said, there's a chance that Toronto is unable re-sign Bo Bichette or reach an agreement with Tucker. If that happens, the Blue Jays have a backup plan. According to Mitch Bannon of the Athletic, the Blue Jays are viewing free agent Alex Bregman as a backup plan if Toronto is unable to sign Bichette or Tucker.

Although both Ernie Clement and Addison Barger can play third base, they also each have other positions to move to if Bregman is signed. For Clement that would be second base (moving Gimenez to shortstop) and for Barger that would be at the corner outfield positions, most likely right field.

This move would ensure Toronto didn't lose any ground when it came to signing star power, adding Cease and then signing Bregman.

With two World Series Championships throughout his career, Bregman could offer plenty of experience as Toronto looks to get over the hump.

Additionally, Bregman has plenty of connections to Toronto's roster, having played with George Springer, Myles Straw, Yimi Garcia and Joey Loperfido as a member of the Houston Astros.

Still, Bregman signing with the Blue Jays would be unlikely, given their pursuit of other free agents in addition to other third base needy clubs interested in Bregman's services (Red Sox, Tigers and Cubs).
