The Texas Rangers were just given good news that Tyler Mahle has returned from the 60-day Injured List, but also means someone had to be let go.

According to Darragh McDonald, the Rangers DFA’d Carl Edwards Jr., a veteran pitcher from the 2016 Chicago Cubs World Series team.

“The Rangers announced that right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. has been designated for assignment. That’s the corresponding move to open a roster spot for right-hander Tyler Mahle’s reinstatement from the 60-day injured list, a move that was reported earlier this week,” McDonald wrote.

Edwards was on a minor league deal with the Rangers, and had only thrown three big league innings with the team, all of which were scoreless.

As stated earlier, this makes room for Mahle, who has a 2.20 ERA in 15 games with 62 strikeouts in 81.2 innings pitched. Mahle was diagnosed with a rotator cuff strain back in June and missed around three months of the season.

Edwards will likely clear waivers, and won’t be picked up by anyone due to there only being a week left in the season. He’ll be able to test free agency this offseason, and hopefully the World Series champion finds another home.
