The MLB is beginning to get upset with its small-market teams, as they continue to tank seasons after not going out and building rosters that cost money to contend. The Tampa Bay Rays are no exception, and they need to make a move for a star to get the MLB off their back and make themselves contenders again.
Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes the best move they can make to appease the MLB is going after Philadelphia Phillies three-time All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto. He could be the perfect big move to provide a spark to the roster.
“The Tampa Bay Rays become a more palatable landing spot with Tropicana Field back in working order ahead of the 2026 campaign. This team really isn't too far out of the mix in the AL East, especially if ownership commits to spending a bit. Catcher is a point of weakness and JT Realmuto is the best option on the market. Even as he ages into his mid-30s, Realmuto offers more pop than your average catcher, and his arm is seldom challenged behind the plate. He'd be a good vet in the locker room, too,” Kline wrote.
This past season, Realmuto slashed.257/.315/.384/.700 with 26 doubles, 12 home runs, and 52 RBI in 134 games. His bat would be a definite upgrade from the Rays’ current catcher, Nick Fortes.
If the Rays really want to contend again, and more so, set a precedent for all small-market teams, they should pursue Realmuto. Who knows, if they can land him on a good deal, they might get a taste for building a contender.
