The St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up a disappointing 2025 season, finishing fourth in the National League Central with a 78-84 record. While the year was defined by offensive inconsistency and pitching struggles, one area of strength stood out: defense.
That defensive excellence was led in part by Victor Scott II, who patrolled center field at an elite level in his sophomore season. On Wednesday afternoon, Scott was recognized for his efforts, earning a spot as a Gold Glove finalist in center field. Other finalists in the National League include Jacob Young of the Washington Nationals and Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs.
Scott ranked among the best defensive outfielders in baseball, finishing tied for 13th in Fielding Run Value and seventh in Outs Above Average with 17. He also tied for sixth in runs prevented, further establishing himself as one of the league’s premier defensive players.
Still, Scott faces long odds to take home the award, given Crow-Armstrong’s standout season. The Cubs center fielder ranked ahead of Scott in most major defensive categories and is considered the favorite to win.
A tighter competition could unfold between Crow-Armstrong and Scott’s teammate Masyn Winn, as both are strong contenders for the Platinum Glove, awarded to each league’s top overall defender among Gold Glove winners. Despite injuries cutting his season short, Winn excelled at shortstop and also received a Gold Glove nomination.
While 2025 didn’t go as planned for St. Louis, the emergence of Winn and Scott II gives Cardinals fans reason for optimism. The duo’s defensive prowess should anchor the team for years to come.
