Cardinals $75 million three-time All-Star ace hints at cutting ties with team; could potentially ask for trade image

The St. Louis Cardinals are at a crossroads right now, as they decide to either try and keep contending, or hit the big red button and rebuild. It seems like they will do the latter, which has affected some of their stars.

One of those stars is their ace, three-time All-Star Sonny Gray. Gray came to St. Louis to compete, and he doesn’t feel like they’re in the right place, and is thinking about waiving his no-trade clause.

“I think I do, just to be frank and to be honest,” the veteran said. “I definitely think I do. Whether I do decide that I want to go somewhere – whether that actually happens – I don’t have complete control of that. Obviously, I have control of where I can’t go or don’t go. I’m going to be 36. It’s going to be my 14th season. Last year of my contract for this. I don’t know what the future holds for me,” Gray said (via Derrick Goold).

Gray continued, stating he wants to win, and he doesn’t think he can if he stays with the Cards.

“I came here to win,” Gray said late Wednesday at Oracle Park. “I signed here two years ago with the expectation of winning and trying to win, and that hasn’t played out that way. I want to win. I want to win, and I expect to win,” Gray stated.

This season, Gray has a record of 14-8 with an ERA of 4.28, 201 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.234 in 180 innings pitched. He definitely could garner some trade interest as long as the Cards eat some of his contract.

Hopefully the Cards find a good deal for the old ace, and find him a home that will help him compete in his final years in the league.
